Dear Steam Fans,
A number or you have emailed the SBRHS about ticket sales for the San Diego Steam Special II, we do have a trip with the 3751 that has been approved by all railroads involved.
We are wrapping up the final details for the 3751 steam locomotive trip to San Diego. The major open issue is Amtrak agreement on the return tickets from San Diego/Los Angeles and how they will be issued. The Amtrak Special Moves division has promised final resolution on this issue by December 17 (now December 21). We hope to get our computerized reservation system on line and ready for business by December 23. Tickets will be available at www.goldenstaterails.com when we are up and running.
Now some details. The train will run from Los Angeles to San Diego on Saturday, May 1, returning to Los Angeles on Sunday, May 2. You will be able to ride the train both ways, if you choose to overnight in San Diego, or you can return to your starting point on the same day by taking a scheduled Surfliner. One way steam train fares will probably be $99 or $198 roundtrip. One way steam train with Surfliner return will be less than $150. Seats in dome cars are available at higher cost.
The trip is sponsored by the Central Coast Railway Club and the Pacific Locomotive Association and the 3751 steam locomotive is maintained and operated by the San Bernardino Railroad Historical Society. All three groups are non-profit organizations with all work done by volunteers. The San Diego Steam Special is run as an Amtrak train.
We promise you an exciting and safe trip along the scenic Amtrak Coast Line behind the steam locomotive that powered the last scheduled passenger steam operation on the Santa Fe, on this line in 1953.
All the best.
